Job Full Description
The Tool and Die Maker is a certified professional responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of tooling used in production, including new tool builds and engineering changes. This position requires a high level of precision and craftsmanship in the use of toolroom equipment (excluding CNC machines), blueprint reading, and machining techniques. The role also involves training apprentices, ensuring all work meets customer standards, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Construct and maintain new tools, engineering changes, and production dies.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices and other assigned personnel.
- Coordinate CNC machining, wire cutting, and heat-treating for projects.
- Train apprentices in the correct and safe methods of tool and die making.
- Report project progress, issues, and tool conditions to the Group Leader or Supervisor.
- Use hand tools, measurement instruments, and overhead cranes as needed.
- Participate in troubleshooting, fine-tuning, and try-outs of tooling.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Comply with all Health & Safety procedures and report any hazards.
- Take responsibility for self-directed tasks and support the professional development of apprentices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Journeyman Tool and Die Maker certification or equivalent experience.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
- Proficient in using measurement tools and related machining equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and train apprentices.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift, bend, and stand for extended periods.
- Comfortable operating overhead cranes and other material-handling equipment.
- Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Standing and walking for long durations.
- Lifting, bending, and mobility required.
- Exposure to machine shop environment, including use of overhead cranes and manual machinery.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
