Title: Mechanical Seal Repair Technician
Location: Milton
Department: Production
Reports To: Engineering / Operation Manager
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: 3 months (With possibility of Extension)

Position Purpose  and Objectives

The Seal Repair Technician reports to the Engineering / Operation Manager and will be responsible for preparing repair analysis reports and inspection reports for seals and seal components received for repair. Further responsibilities are assembling seals according to drawings and preparing seals for shipment to meet promised delivery times to customers. This position will also involve some machining and responsibility to coordinate with involved departments related activities and duties covering receiving and shipping products using SAP.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Dismantle and clean wet, gas lubricated seals, dry running seals and seal components. Check seal components for defects and dimensional deviations from manufacturing drawings. Identify materials and decide if a repair is possible or replacement is required. This also includes seal-specific duties such as lapping, polishing and grinding.
  • Identify Product, analyze product failures, and produce reports for quotation purposes and scope of repairs. Help and assist with failure analysis and recommended improvements to the product, original equipment, and end-user processes.
  • Use SAP software for receiving, shipping, moving, etc. of goods
  • Help establish procedures and processes to meet promised delivery times and reduce cycle time for current repairs.
  • Assembly/packaging seals for shipment to the customer (new and repaired).
  • Meet the requirements of EBCA Quality Standards, HSE policies, and control EBCA design & development procedures.
  • Review and approve product (typical for cartridge seals) utilizing static testing / dynamic testing.
  • Some basic machining (CNC lathe, manual milling, surface grinder) as part of seal repair
  • Make suggestions for fixtures etc., for easier and better performing routine tasks for cases where a standard is unavailable.
  • Understand the need for emergency repairs and what needs to be done for fast turnaround to meet customers’ expectations.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and undertake other tasks as assigned.
  • Understand and execute good housekeeping such as 5S.
  • Support Maintenance tasks when necessary (equipment, building, fixture, change of layout, machine installation)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Must possess 2-4 years of working knowledge of the repair process for mechanical seals and their supply systems or any related experience with rotating equipment such as pumps, agitators or compressors.
  • An advantage is a working knowledge to apply, interpret and use Work Standards and follow Job Instructions mentioned under “Duties and Responsibilities.”
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively to other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Computer literate – SAP, Microsoft Package (Outlook, Excel and Word)
  • CNC programming skills / CNC lathe operation skills are desired.
  • Blueprint reading and interpretation skills are mandatory.
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently and undertake site visits to customers
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Requires good judgement and a professional demeanour

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and talk or hear. Must be able to lift heavy seal components. This employee is also subjected to daily computer use. May be required to travel occasionally as needed.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here represent those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually subject to the conditions of a workshop environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Mechanical Engineering Technologist or similar qualification
  • 3-years minimum experience with repairing Mechanical Seals or rotating equipment
