Job Full Description
1 General Statement of Duties
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, detailed and competitive cost estimates for plumbing, heating and gasfitting projects in residential, commercial and light industrial settings. This includes reviewing drawings and specifications, obtaining supplier and subcontractor pricing and preparing professional bid proposals. The Estimator ensures all estimates align with company standards, profitability goals and Alberta codes and regulations.
2 Supervision Received
- Reports directly to the General Manager or CEO.
3 Supervision Exercised
- May provide guidance to field personnel or administrative staff assisting with estimating
- Collaborates closely with the General Manager, Service Manager, Journeypersons and office staff to ensure accurate project scoping and costing
4 Key Focus Areas
- Accurate cost estimation for plumbing, heating and gasfitting projects
- Detailed review of project drawings, specifications, and tender documents
- Preparation of material and co-ordinating labour requirements
- Procurement and submission of professional proposals and tender documents within timelines
- Cost tracking and budget support throughout the project execution
- Collaboration with internal teams to ensure cost accuracy and scope alignment
- Continuous improvement of estimating tools, templates and processes
- Maintaining knowledge of current market pricing, materials, and labour costs in Central Alberta
- Supporting Management with pricing strategies and profitability analysis
1 Summary of Duties
- Uphold and promote the Mission, Vision and Core Values of the organization
- Review and analyze project drawings, specifications and scope of work
- Prepare detailed and accurate estimates, including materials, labour, equipment and subcontractor components
- Conduct site visits in the Red Deer and Central Alberta area to gather information for bids and scope clarification
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing to ensure competitive bids
- Ensure all estimates comply with Alberta Building Code, Alberta Gas Code and applicable safety regulations
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walkthroughs and post-bid reviews
- Support Management with cost control, budgeting and change order pricing
- Maintain organized records of all tenders, estimates and historical cost data
- Collaborate with Management team to improve estimating processes and maintain consistent profit margins
- Provide recommendations to enhance bid competitiveness and operational efficiency
2 Education and Experience
- Valid Driver’s License;
- Journeyperson certification in Plumbing and Gasfitting B - preferred
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in plumbing, heating or gasfitting service, including at least two (2) years in estimating, project management or related roles
- Strong understanding of plumbing and heating systems, materials and installation practices
- Experience estimating projects in residential, commercial or light industrial construction within Alberta
3 Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications
- Thorough understanding of plumbing, heating, and gas systems, codes and materials
- Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Suite
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in estimating and documentation
- Effective communication and negotiation skills with clients, suppliers and subcontractors
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to safety, quality workmanship and customer satisfaction
- Adaptability and problem-solving skills to support dynamic project requirements
