Express Employment Professionals is recruiting a Customs Classification & Compliance Specialist for a leading organization in Guelph, Ontario. This is a short-term contract opportunity supporting the Customs & Logistics team during a high-priority operational period.

This role is ideal for a highly experienced customs professional with strong expertise in HS/HTS classification, regulatory compliance, and audit support across Canada and the United States. The successful candidate will act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance on classification standards, compliance processes, and broker oversight.

What You’ll Be Responsible ForCustoms Classification & Compliance Leadership

  • Acting as the subject matter expert for HS/HTS classification across finished goods, components, accessories, and spare parts
  • Reviewing, validating, and approving tariff classifications prepared internally or by customs brokers
  • Establishing and maintaining classification standards, frameworks, and documentation requirements
  • Conducting complex classification analysis using engineering data, specifications, BOMs, and product function
  • Maintaining centralized classification master data within ERP and broker systems

CBSA & CBP Regulatory Compliance

  • Interpreting and applying CBSA and CBP regulations related to classification, valuation, origin, marking, and documentation
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for customs brokers and authorities regarding classification inquiries and verifications
  • Monitoring regulatory changes and ensuring timely internal implementation

Audits, Risk & Controls

  • Leading internal classification audits and verification activities
  • Supporting and defending audit activity with CBSA and CBP in collaboration with brokers and consultants
  • Identifying compliance risks and recommending corrective actions
  • Strengthening audit readiness and internal control processes

Broker Oversight & Cross-Functional Support

  • Reviewing broker entries and identifying discrepancies or risk areas
  • Supporting SOP development and maintaining compliance documentation standards
  • Collaborating with Canadian and U.S. customs brokers on reporting, declarations, and performance review
  • Supporting duty drawback initiatives with brokers and consultants

What We’re Looking For

  • 5–7 years of progressive experience in customs classification and compliance
  • Previous experience as a customs clearance agent, licensed customs broker, or customs officer
  • Expert-level knowledge of HS/HTS classification systems
  • Proven experience supporting CBSA and/or CBP audits
  • Strong understanding of valuation, origin rules, and post-entry corrections
  • Ability to set standards, guide decision-making, and provide compliance oversight across teams

Preferred:

  • Licensed Customs Broker (Canada or U.S.) or equivalent designation
  • Experience with manufactured consumer goods or appliances
  • Exposure to trade remedies, enforcement actions, or duty drawback programs

Technical Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working with ERP systems and customs broker platforms
